We had 9 H20 owners and 4 boats at the Cinco de Mayo party, some came by car
and a total of 26 people for lunch. The costumes made it special too. Jim
Ellis and Fulvia diMarzo won the awards for best costume. Big thanks to Pat
and Howard for being fantastic hosts. The new pilings made for a great H20
fleet marina so I hope we get invited back some day. Everything including
the wind was perfect.

I am organizing another social sailing event in September when we will sail
from Annapolis up the Severn River and dock on Luce Creek for lunch. It
will be hard to top Cinco de Mayo, but I will do my best.

Commodores Cup June 23rd. SAVE THE DATE!

Your Fleet 5 officers have been working with AYC to gain additional recognition for our growing H-20 fleet. This has resulted in a very special opportunity for Fleet 5 members. The weekend of June 22 -24 will mark the 126th anniversary of Annapolis Yacht Club. The weekend will commence with the Commodores Reception on Friday June 22. On Saturday, June 23rd, plans are being made to hold a special Harbor-20 Commodores Cup Race. The plan is to invite all of the current and past AYC commodores to race on Harbor-20’s. Each boat will sail with a three person crew, which will include the boat owner, a Commodore, and a crew person selected by the commodore. The Commodore and his/her selected crew will race the boar and will look to the owner for “hands off” advice on boat operating and performance. This race will mark the first award of a special Commodores H-20 Cup trophy. The trophy will include the names of the winning Commodore, crew, and boat name and a keeper award will be given. This race event will have a good chance of becoming an annual club anniversary event featuring H-20’s, and will be a unique opportunity for our fleet. A special luncheon for all of the race participants will follow the race, and will serve as the awards ceremony for this event.

After lunch, Fleet 5 members can participate in a meet and greet with fellow club members who are interested in the prospect of owning a Harbor-20. Since our boats will be docked in front of the Club, it will be easy to offer to take interested people for an introductory sail. Essentially this will be a Harbor 20 Day at the Club. A lot of people will . . . → Read More: Harbor-20 Fleet 5 Newsletter No. 5

Commodores Cup Continued

Please Email me or call with your response as soon as possible so we can move forward with the planning of this event. habrooks@aol.com Phone: 410-349-1497.

Cinco de Mayo Sailing Lunch Cruise Celebration

As announced in Peter’s email, we are looking forward to entertain the fleet on our home on May 5th (weather day May 6th). As stated, the plan is to launch our boats at 10:00 AM and proceed with a group sail to the Brooks’ house on Ridout Creek off from Whitehall Creek. Margaritas and lunch will be waiting at the dock upon your arrival around 1:00 PM. Around 2:30 we will start the sail back or be towed back in order to haul boats by 5:00 PM. This is our first social event under sail, and invited friends and family are welcome to attend. Pleas let Peter know by May first if you can attend, and the number of people on your boat. trogdon@weems-plath.com

New H-20 Owners

We have three new owners who are in the process of joining Fleet 5. Michael Turner and Rick Hill have jointly purchased h20 (Sail No. 186) from Garth Hichens. Garth’s new H-20 (Sail No. 339) has arrived, and is in the process of being named. Ruth Wright has also purchased a used H-20, and is looking forward to joining us to both race and socialize. Please introduce yourself and welcome to Ruth, Rick, and Michael to our fleet.

South Carolina Yacht Club Harbor 20 East Coast Championship

As you may recall, we had received an invitation to participate in DeSole Cup Regatta at South Carolina Yacht Club on Hilton Head Island which was announced in detail the December 2011 News Letter No. 2. I have just received the “Notice of Race” as shown below.

To my knowledge, I do not know of anyone from Fleet 5 who is planning to trailer their boat to Hilton Head to participate in this event. It is also unfortunate that the race falls on the same weekend as our Cinco de Mayo social get together. I know that the folks from SCYC would like to have us involved, and perhaps next year we can have a few boats make the trip. If you are interested in this year’s event, please contact David Wilson, Yachting Director. His phone number is 843-540-4797

You’ve seen them out there, all those Harbor 20’s racing about Newport Harbor. Have you ever contemplated competing in your Harbor 20, but just don’t know how to get started? Jumping in to the existing B-Fleet can be intimidating because the fleet is pretty big. But, as of the 2011-2012 racing season, there is now a C-Fleet in Newport Harbor. The C-Fleet offers an introductory experience to sailing a Harbor 20, whether your interest lies in racing or not. Even if you have no interest in racing your Harbor 20, trying a bit of racing helps develop boat handling and seamanship skills faster than any other learning activity.
