HARBOR 20 FLEET FOUR

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

OCT. 15, 2015

 

CALL TO ORDER: Fred Rice presiding. Executive Committee members Thomas Wright, Morgan Green, Bill Bench attending. Quorum established. Fleet members attending: Leslie and Scott Deardorff, Brian Green, Bhrian Resnik, John Jeffries (webmaster), Sandra Denton, Jane Watkins.

 

  1. MINUTES of July 2015 session. Read by Morgan Green.

 

  1. UPDATES OF OLD BUSINESS: Fred Rice –

 

(a) boom sheave replacements: the Fleet Four policy was adopted in concept by the National H20 Association board. The new policy is scheduled for an H20 National Association board vote.

 

(b) Ullman mainsails: At its July meeting, the Executive Committee took the following action:  Motion by Geoff Slaff, second by Morgan Green: All new or replacement mainsails shall be Ullman mainsails (as made to meet current class specifications) after the Holiday Regatta of 2015.

Approval: Unanimous.

With executive committee agreement, Fred subsequently emailed all Fleet Four owners asking them to say whether they favored the executive committee action that. The email response was 10 owners in favor. Nobody voted against, thereby confirming the board’s earlier action. Discussion on Oct. 15 included questions regarding a sunset deadline for use of Elliott/Pattison mains, and whether owners could switch between Ullmans    and E/P mains. Morgan Green clarified that the adopted policy was for no sunset on E/P main use, but when a sail is replaced, it must be an Ullman sail. The suggestion was made by Scott Deardorff for a sunset date for E/P main use. The need for a sunset date will be placed on the next Fleet Meeting (Jan. 7, 2016) agenda for discussion.

 

(c) Spinnaker maker – Naming a single maker for Fleet Four spinnakers was raised by Scott Deardorff. The idea will be placed on the next Fleet Meeting agenda for discussion.

 

  1. DISCOUNTS ON ULLMAN SAILS: Brian Green reported that there is a current 15 percent discount for Ullman mainsails, but a bigger discount is possible if the fleet gets a group order together. There are currently 8 owners who have indicated they want to buy Ullman mains.

The idea of  also including jib and spinnaker orders was raised.  Fred is to send out an email to all Fleet Four owners asking who wants to order Ullman mains, jibs, and spinnakers. EMAIL RESPONDENTS ARE TO REPLY TO  BRIAN GREEN, to coordinate a group discount purchase on all sails.

 

  1. FINANCIAL REPORT: Fred Reports on behalf of Geoff that all collected dues remain to be spent as the Fleet decides.

 

  1. WEIGHING BOATS: Fred reports that the H20 National Association has ruled that all boats must weigh at least 1,950 pounds. This was done after it was learned that Schock’s new manufacturing method was turning out boats between 20 and 150 pounds lighter than older boats. So, all boats numbered 335 or higher must be weighed, and corrective weights put in the battery compartments if they are too light. The fleets newest boats, Sirocco and Pleione, must be weighed with all standing rigging and required equipment aboard, as per association requirements. Leslie Deardorff requested that her older boat also be weighed. Ken Kieding was reported to have an easy method of weighing Fleet Four boats. Fred is to send out an email to all Fleet owners asking if they want their boat officially weighed as well, although weighing is voluntary only for hulls 334 or lower.

 

 

  1. SAFETY GEAR: The question of Fleet Four needing heavier ground tackle due to local sea conditions will await the return of Geoff Slaff, who is investigating the issue.

 

  1. 2016 CALENDAR: Jane Watkins distributed the SBYC racing calendar for 2016. The 2016 Fiesta Cup will include the Harbor 20 fleet. The other fleet will be J-70s as the regatta is part of their West Coast Championship series.

 

 

  1. H20 TROPHY PARTY: Jane reported that the Rosings would host the party. Leslie Deardorff will contact them to organize.

 

 

  1. UPCOMING EVENTS: Jane Watkins noted upcoming races she hopes the fleet will enter, including the CHRF Lady at the Helm on Oct. 18; the Wilmot Hughes PHRF race (with Harbor 20s to receive a non-spin handicap of 234). Some fleet members discussed the upcoming Sailing Club Goblin Regatta and it was agreed that racers could decide among themselves whether to race the regatta’s second day, or just on Saturday.

Jane said she will also discuss a schedule of starting clinics for Fleet Four with Ken Kieding.

 

  1. NEXT MEETING WILL BE A FLEET MEETING AT 5:30 P.M. ON JAN. 7, 2016 AT THE SBYC. NOMINATIONS FOR NEW FLEET OFFICERS WILL BE ON THE AGENDA.

Flotilla for Lee

On behalf of the entire Lee Sutherland Family, we want to thank those thinking of Lee during this most difficult time and thank those who were able to participate in the very moving flotilla tribute when he was laid to rest September 20. It just means so much. It was really, really beautiful and is so appreciated — Lee would have loved it.

We also want to thank all the members of our Harbor 20 Fleet for the many wonderful years of fun sailing, competition, and camaraderie — being part of the fleet and skippering his number 48 just brought him so much joy.

Sail Purchase Window Has Opened

The Fleet 1 approved sail purchase window is October 5th to November 30th, 2015. This is your only opportunity to buy new sails until after the Fleet 1 2016 Championships!

According to the Class bylaws:

III.H.8. For a Class Yacht, the Owner may purchase one jib sail in each calendar year and one main sail in every second calendar year.

After purchase, the Fleet 1 Measurer will inspect, measure and sign the sail before it may be used.

According to the Fleet 1 bylaws:

III.C.7. The Fleet has appointed Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers as its sole permitted sail maker for new mainsails, and Ullman Sails as its sole permitted sail maker for new jibs. No other sail/sail maker combinations will be allowed.

The cost of a new mail sail from Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers is $1,594.  They are offering a 20% discount to Fleet 1 members: $1275.20. You can save an additional $25 by re-using your main batons. They can be reached at 949 645-6697.

Pinckney’s Sail Away with Championships

For the 2nd year in a row, Jon and Gale Pinckney have won the Harbor 20 Division A Championships with an impressive four 1st place finishes out of a total of 8 races over two days in Newport Harbor over the weekend. A total of 33 teams participated in the annual event which represents the final event for the Harbor 20 sailing year.

Jim & Mary Buckingham received 2nd place while Kurt & Anne Wiese received 3rd place. Six of the top eight competitors in A Division were husband / wife teams, which is common among the Harbor 20 Fleet.

Len Bose and Craig Chamberlain won the B Division Championship, with Daniel and Mariah Geissmann and John & Mary Whitney getting 2nd and 3rd places. Similar to the A Division, five of the top 9 finishers in B Division were husband / wife teams.

Porter Killian & Chris Killian, a father / son team, dominated the C Division by getting 1st place in all eight races, earning him them the right to sail in B Division.

The Harbor 20 Fleet thanks Newport Harbor Yacht Club as the OA and hosting the social events surrounding Championships. Complete race results are available here.

Ask The Judges – Preparation for the Championships

On Friday, October 2, the day before the Championship, the H20 Association is sponsoring an evening called “ASK THE JUDGES” at 7:00 PM at NHYC. Certified judges will be present to answer any and all questions you might have about the Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013-2016. A whiteboard with magnetic boats will be used to help visualize on-the-water situations as they change over time.

Don’t go into the Championship with lingering questions about the rules. We will be entertaining questions such as:

1)     Can you have contact with another boat and not have broken a rule?

2)     If two overlapped, close hauled, starboard tack boats reach a windward mark to be left to port, does the leeward boat have to fall off at the mark, or can it continue to sail on, taking the windward boat with it?

3)     Can boats on opposite tacks be overlapped?

4)     If a boat running on port tack overlaps to leeward a boat running on starboard tack, and then jibes, does he (she) then have luffing rights?

5)     Does a boat which tacks from port to starboard inside the 3 boat length circle ever have rights to mark room?

6)     The committee boat is a mark and an obstruction. Is an inside boat, overlapped to windward, entitled to room at the obstruction before starting?

7)     Is a boat ever required to sail her proper course?

8)     Does a boat which is sailing above close hauled have to fall off to a close hauled course at the starting signal?

9)     Can you take a penalty turn anytime before the finish of a race to exonerate yourself of a rule infraction?

 

Answers:

 

1) No

 

2) Yes or no, depending on how the overlap was established

 

3) Yes , if both are sailing more than 90 degrees from the wind

 

4) Yes

 

5) Yes

 

6) Yes, unless approaching the starting line to start (barging)

 

7) No

 

8 ) Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It all depends on how overlaps with adjacent boats were established.

 

9) No. A penalty must be taken as soon as possible after the time of the incident.
